Thanks @sanderd17, in case anyone else lands here I figured it out: My Linux server was configured with an Ethernet interface with static IP (which I pulled the cable out of once wifi was working) and a Wireless interface that was actually connected. Because of the static IP the Linux server saw the Ethernet inteface as still enabled even though it didn't have a cable any more, and (I think) was trying to reply to my Wireless ping on the Ethernet interface. Or something like that.
Canon network printer 'destination host unreachable' BUT HP network printer will print. Have been on phone hours with helpful Canon tech however solution not found. Canon PIXMA 340 will not print (wireless) from Lenovo laptop (Windows 7). HP 3520 wireless will print from same laptop BUT AN AWFUL PRINTER CONSTANT PAPER JAMS! I get an answer from eth0(192.168.1.1) but when I try to ping the external interface(eth1, 194.236.x.x) I get 'destination host unreachable'. Worth to mention is that the eth1 is not visable in ReportingNetwork only eth0.
Disabling the Ethernet interface fixed it, anyway!–Feb 20 '17 at 18:31.
DESTINATION HOST UNREACHABLE means that your computer doesn't know howto send packets to the destination address, because none of theentries in the route table match the destination. It usually meansthat there's a problem with the default route, which uses the defaultgateway address to communicate with all IP addresses that aren't onthe local area network.Request Timed Out means that the computer found a route to thedestination and sent the packets, but that there was no reply.-Best Wishes,Steve Winograd, MS-MVP (Windows Networking)Please post any reply as a follow-up message in the news groupfor everyone to see.
I'm sorry, but I don't answer questionsaddressed directly to me in E-mail or news groups.Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Program. Thanks, Steve. I checked the System Log in Event Viewer and discovered aWarning:Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from theDHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 00.
Thefollowing error occurred:'The semaphore timeout period has expired. Your computer will continue totry and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP)server.' 8 seconds later this Warning occurred:'Your computer has automatically configured the IP address for the NetworkCard with network address 00. The IP address being used is169.254.42.248.' This 169.254.42.248 address has occurred several times over the last fewdays.

It only happens on my winXP notebook and I think that it has onlyhappened since I switched from NIS to ZA. But it only happens sometimes. The next boot was fine. It is happening about half the time now. Anyideas? The name 'Myworkgroup:1d' could not be registered on the Interface with IPaddress 192.168.1.50. The machine with the IP address 192.168.1.53 did notallow the name to be claimed by this machine. It doesn't work?Click Start Control Panel Performance and Maintenance Administrative Tools Event Viewer. I'm sorry, but I don't answer questionsaddressed directly to me in E-mail or news groups.Microsoft Most Valuable Professional Program.I get the same message of 'Destination Host Unreachable'. When I ping the router.
I have tried numerous solutionsbut nothing has worked. All the other computers on thenetwork are having no problems. I have uninstalled thenetwork drivers, the network card and rebooted severaltimes. My problem started when I set the computer up on a networkthat did not have a router and I assigned IP addresses sothe computers could talk through the hub I was using. When I reconnected to the router and removed the manual IPadresses the computer would not even ping the router. Ihave check all the settings and gone over all theknnowledge base info I can find. I read about resettingthe default gateway but have not found any information onhow to perform this operstion. What is next??? When I ping the router.

Mackgm, I'm no expert but I have learned a few things while suffering whatseems like every problem ever invented over the last couple of months. Thefirst thing I would do is Start-Run-cmd-ipconfig and see what IP address isassigned to the pertainent network adapter.
If it is totally different thanthe other network PCs then you know you're not getting the proper IPassignment. Are you wireless? If so then do Start-Setting-Control Panel-NetworkConnections and right click the Wireless network connection and clickproperties. Then click the Wireless Networks tab and look in the Preferrednetworks pane. Do you see the netork that you wish to connect to?
If so,then select it and click properties and see if the Network name (SSID) isproper. If so check out the Data encryption check box. It should match upwith the other computers. Same for Network Authentication.
If none of thishelps keep looking around this area to find something different from theother computers. You'll find it sooner or later. (Otherwise some realexpert will reply with a better answer.) Good luck!
